It’s been months since Nicki Minaj caused an internet firestorm when she accused MTV of racist practices when it comes to selecting the nominees for the VMAs. At the time, Taylor Swift butted in and tried to diminish Minaj’s complaints and only ended up embarrassing herself and inflaming the situation. But after a public apology, the beef quickly faded and fans nearly forgot about the uproar. But Miley Cyrus brought the drama back into the spotlight recently when she blasted Minaj for complaining about MTV.
In a new interview with the New York Times, Cyrus discussed the Minaj and MTV dustup and claimed that she loosely followed the story.
“I saw that. I didn’t really get into it. I know there was some beef. I don’t really know. There’s a way to talk to people …,” Cyrus said before adding, “She was saying that everyone was white and blonde that got nominated, I heard? And then Taylor Swift butted in.”
The publication then claimed that Minaj may have been including Cyrus’ “Wrecking Ball” video in regards to white women being nominated for video of the year when they break Vevo records, like Minaj’s “Anaconda” did.
“I didn’t follow it. You know what I always say? Not that this is jealousy, but jealousy does the opposite of what you want it to — that’s a yoga mantra. People forget that the choices that they make and how they treat people in life affect you in a really big way. If you do things with an open heart and you come at things with love, you would be heard and I would respect your statement. But I don’t respect your statement because of the anger that came with it. And it’s not anger like, ‘Guys, I’m frustrated about some things that are a bigger issue.’ You made it about you. Not to sound like a b—-, but that’s like, “Eh, I didn’t get my V.M.A.’” Cyrus said.
The journalist then tried to interject and explain that Minaj did in fact touch upon the bigger issue of black women’s contributions to culture being diminished in favor of their white counterparts, who often appropriate elements of black culture. However, Cyrus refused to let the journalist speak and went on to rant about how she felt Minaj didn’t have a right to talk about race because she was being disrespectful.
